Terrain & Riding

The dune itself is massive, with steep climbs and open bowls for high-powered machines, plus plenty of smaller dunes and ridges for casual cruising.

  • Main Dune: Nearly 500 feet high—perfect for testing horsepower and skill

  • Surrounding Dunes: Wide open areas for exploring and technical lines

  • Soft Sand: Airing down tires is recommended for all vehicles

This is a pure sandbox for riders who want big climbs, flowing ridges, and incredible views from the top.

Camping

Camping is permitted at the base of the dunes in designated open areas. Like most desert riding spots, this is primitive camping only—come prepared.

  • No services, hookups, or water available

  • Vault toilets may be present

  • RVs, trailers, and toy haulers welcome

  • Pack in everything you need, and pack it all back out

Permits & Fees

Unlike Dumont, no permit or fee is currently required to access Big Dune. It’s open year-round under BLM management.

👉 Always check the BLM Big Dune page before your trip for the latest updates.

Safety & Rules

Big Dune is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and basic OHV rules apply:

  • Helmets required for ATVs and dirt bikes

  • Whip flags recommended for visibility in the dunes

  • Ride within your limits and watch for blind crests

  • Respect wildlife and the desert environment

⚠️ Important Note: Big Dune is home to rare species like the Big Dune beetle. Stay on the open sand and avoid vegetated areas to help protect the habitat.

Events & Best Times to Ride

Big Dune doesn’t draw the massive crowds of Dumont, but that’s part of its appeal. It’s a quieter, more open dune riding experience.

  • Best Season: Fall through spring (cooler temps)

  • Summer: Extreme heat—plan carefully

  • Holiday Weekends: Expect more riders, but still less crowded than larger dune areas

Plan Your Trip

✅ Bring extra fuel, water, and food—no services nearby
✅ Air down tires for better traction
✅ Be prepared for strong winds and temperature swings
✅ Ride with friends, and always have recovery gear
